A Pakistani fashion model–Qandeel Baloch– was strangled to death by her own brother after she posted a photo online of herself with a Muslim cleric, joking about the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, which is considered holy among Muslims, and a time during which they are supposed to fast.
She reportedly falsely stated that she and the cleric had drank colas and and smoked tobacco together. The joke reportedly sparked widespread furor among many Muslims. The brother claimed he enacted an ‘honor killing’ in the name of his religion.
Reportedly hundreds of Pakistani women are murdered each year by so called ‘honor killings. Any religion that teaches killing those who make a joke of it, is a religion of violence–not peace. While Ms. Balock should have known the danger she faced for exercising her freedom of speech, it is unfortunate that she lived in a land that not only did not respect freedom of speech, but that worse–tramples on human rights and suppresses the rights of women.
