Kitsch, cool, and super funny, Barbie is a smash hit, with the beautiful and talented Margot Robbie as the star, playing the perfect doll in a perfect world. Ruling the world of Barbie and the real world, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has made over 1 billion dollars worldwide–a global record for a female director.
The awesome director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women, Frances Ha) made here an instant cult classic, in the style of “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” or “Bettlejuice,” except a lot less dark, and a lot more–Barbie.
Based on the iconic Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, Gerwig’s is the first live-action Barbie film, following a number of animated Barbie projects. Gerwig’s film follows Barbie, played fantastically by Margot Robbie, and Ken, played equally greatly by Ryan Gosling, on a comedic journey of self-discovery and self-love during a superficial existential crisis. In other words–a very Hollywood moment. In fact, Barbie and Ken go leave Barbie world, and travel to none other than Hollywood itself, even cruising down Venice Beach boardwalk on roller skates. It’s all perfect, and hillarious. And it’s perhaps even more enjoyable if you live in LA or have at least been here before.
Barbie also features an outstanding ensemble including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Helen Mirren, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
The beautiful and talented Dua Lipa even makes a surprise cameo in the film, whose song “Dance the Night” is prominently featured in the movie.
The greatly talented and funny Kate McKinnon breaks character at least once during the film, clearly have a fun time playing her role of Weird Barbie, who has to save Barbie, and lead her to her true self.
The audience we saw the film with were laughing, smiling, and clearly loved the film as much as we did. And while we won’t spoil the ending if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a nice date movie–yes, even for you guys.
